How to Get Started on Celo

Celo is a blockchain ecosystem that's carbon-negative, mobile-first, and EVM-compatible. In this guide we are here to get you started with Celo.

How to Get Started on Celo

Introduction

Celo is a  blockchain ecosystem that's carbon-negative, mobile-first, and EVM-compatible. It's driving a digital economy that's accessible to all. In January 2023, cLabs launched Celo 2.0, a version emphasizing usability, mobile access, and global payments. Recently, cLabs proposed a significant shift for Celo. They suggested transitioning from an independent layer-1 blockchain to an Ethereum layer-2 (L2) solution. This move would transform Celo into an Ethereum L2 blockchain using OP Stack architecture. It's a technical upgrade to enhance Celo's capabilities and scalability, aligning with the Ethereum L2 ecosystem. This integration will allow Celo developers to use Ethereum tools and libraries, improving scalability and reducing costs.

The transition to Ethereum L2 will also boost interoperability between Celo and other Ethereum-based projects. It means increased compatibility with the broader Ethereum ecosystem. If the proposal is adopted, it will lead to migration to Ethereum L2. These improvements enhance functionality, scalability, and interoperability, attracting both users and developers. With a focus on mobile access and user-friendly design, Celo aims to reach billions of smartphone users, including those without traditional banking.

The Celo ecosystem is thriving, with contributions from over a thousand projects in more than 150 countries. Joining now lets you be part of this dynamic community. Celo's carbon-negative commitment aligns with global sustainability efforts, appealing to those interested in eco-friendly tech. In this guide we are here to get you started with Celo. From creating a wallet to getting it funded to start participating in the Celo ecosystem.

Downloading a wallet

Celo provides various wallet options to suit different needs, whether you're on mobile or using a web browser. If you're a mobile user, the Valora wallet is our top recommendation. It's user-friendly and available on both the Play Store and the App Store. For web browser interaction, Metamask is the preferred choice. As a browser extension, it's compatible with Chrome, Firefox, and Brave.
